Trek Season Window Picker
Bhutan has two distinct trekking windows: March–May (spring, rhododendrons, fewer trekkers) and September–November (autumn, post-monsoon, peak demand). Snowman is a narrower September–October window. Some treks have shoulder seasons you can use to dodge crowds. This tool picks the month(s) when your chosen trek is realistic.

Seasonality grid
What this solves
Most generic "best time to visit Bhutan" pages say March–May and September–November. That applies to sightseeing — not to high-altitude treks. Snowman in early October is iconic; Snowman in late October is a snow gamble. This tool shows the seasonality at trek-level granularity.
How to read the grid
- Green = best window — trail is clear, weather stable.
- Amber = shoulder — doable, watch weather windows.
- Red = closed / not recommended.
Limitations
- Climate change is shifting monsoon patterns. Late autumn windows are less reliable than they were a decade ago.
- This tool uses typical windows — actual conditions vary. Confirm with your operator 2 weeks before departure.
- Snowman has been fully closed in some years due to early snowfall.
FAQ
Why is Snowman only September–October?
Above 5,000 m, snow stays year-round. The narrow September–October window offers the least snow on passes while temperatures are still survivable. Going outside that window is either closed or rescue-dependent.
Can I trek in December?
Lower-altitude treks (Druk Path, Gangtey Nature, Bumthang Cultural) are doable. Jomolhari / Snowman are closed.
