Daily Tariff Min-Spend Optimizer
Bhutan requires every visitor (post-2022 reform) to spend at least USD 200 per adult per night through a licensed tour operator — this is the "daily tariff." Many travelers don't realize: it is per person, not per group, and only a small portion of it goes to the government. The rest pays for your vehicle, guide, meals, and hotel.
Model your spend
What this solves
Operators quote $200, $250, or $300/day per person depending on hotel tier. Travelers assume this is mostly "profit." In reality, the room, meals, vehicle, guide, and driver consume most of it. This tool shows the implied cost structure so you can see where the money actually goes and where there's room to push back.
How to read the result
- Hotel room is per room (1 or 2 pax). A couple pays one room; a solo pays one room too.
- Meals ~Nu 1,200/day per pax (hotel in Bumthang) to Nu 2,500 in Thimphu 4-star.
- Vehicle ~Nu 3,500/day (Toyota Coaster or Innova split across all pax).
- Guide + driver ~Nu 4,500/day total.
- SDF is the government's Nu 1,200/day fee, paid separately — see SDF Calculator.
Limitations
- Costs vary by season (peak Oct–Nov adds 15–30%); shoulder season (Mar–May, Dec) is cheaper.
- This tool uses indicative 2026 figures. Confirm with your operator.
- SDF is not part of the tariff line — it is added separately.
FAQ
Is $200/person/day negotiable?
Officially it's the minimum. In practice, large groups in shoulder season can negotiate down to $180 for the same hotel tier. Smaller groups in peak season pay $250–$300.
Do children under 6 count toward the minimum?
No. Children under 6 are exempt from SDF and don't count toward the daily minimum spend. Children 6–11 pay half SDF and partial tariff.
